Nanaimo is the second largest city on Vancouver Island, located on the east coast it is centrally situated 110 km north of Victoria and 136 km south of Campbell River. It is separated from Vancouver by the Strait of Georgia but directly linked via BC Ferries which runs regular car and pedestrian service all year round.
It is the gateway to many other destinations both on the island: Tofino, Comox Valley, Campbell River, Sooke, Chemainus, and off its coast: Salt Spring Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, Galiano Island and many other of the Gulf Islands.
Nanaimo has been dubbed the "Hub City" because of its central location on Vancouver Island and due to the layout of the downtown streets which form a "hub" pattern. It is also fondly known as the "Hub, Tub, and Pub City" because of its association with bathtub racing and the numerous "watering holes" in Old Nanaimo.
